FSC is common sense
”Between generations, the idea of how forests should be used has certainly changed.”
To Juha Kuittinen, acquiring FSC certification for his forests came naturally.
“FSC is common sense from both an economic and a forest management point of view,” said Kuittinen. Kuittinen, aged 55, has been a forest owner for a long time. Formerly, the ownership of 350 forest hectares provided him a living, but nowadays he works in the IT sector.
“My father wanted to take every single piece of deadwood out of the forest, although it doesn’t even make good firewood. I, on the other hand, want to have as much profit from the forest, relative to the effort made. Leaving the deadwood in the forest, for example, is - from this point of view - profitable not only for the nature, but also for me.”
Greater profit and good forest management
For Kuittinen, the economic profit from the forest is essential.
“FSC is internationally renowned; there is demand for FSC wood and it yields better prices. Even before certification, I managed my forests sustainably, including having protected areas. FSC certification has brought about additional positive changes. I believe that in the future all forest management in the world will in transition to the requirements behind FSC,” said Kuittinen.
