Ensuring good labour practices in Namibia

Kallie von Flotow is a farmer with the Friedheim Timbers’ Forest Management Group Scheme in Namibia. His father bought the 5,000 hectare farm in 1942 and Kallie inherited it in 1969.

To Kallie, the surrounding environment brings daily joy. One of his passions is improving the biodiversity on his farm. He chose FSC certification because he wanted to have a clear conscious when dying that he did the right thing for nature and the people working for him. His wife supported the idea. They both feel FSC allows the concept of sustainability to be understood and applied at all levels, from the buyer to the farmer and the workers.

Kallie began charcoal production when he needed to de-bush his farm of the invasive acacia species and make the best use of natural energy. That venture has since turned into one that employs 30 people living with their families on the farm.

He believes that FSC brought good labour practices to the certified farms of Namibia in general. Personally, he provides meal rations for his workers and their families on a weekly basis. This allows for balanced nutrition and minimised poaching of wildlife on the farm. He has also provided a piece of land for each family to plant and maintain their own vegetable gardens.
